Nigel Cunis Pottery
I have worked with a variety of clays and techniques over the years ranging from slip-trailed and Sgraffito earthenware, often using “wild” clay dug from my garden, to raku. Having built a large wood burning kiln during the Covid lockdown of 2020 I am now concentrating on wood fired stoneware. Much of my work is inspired by Japanese studio pottery. This was given impetus by a trip to Japan in 2019 including visits to three important pottery areas, Tamba, Bizen and Mashiko – where we were lucky enough to be shown round the museum/former workshop of my great hero Shoji Hamada by his grandson Tomoo Hamada.
